Unity College is 5-16 school specialising in Business and Enterprise. Enterprise is at the heart of the curriculum and is supported by many extra-curricular activities. HERO was born from the school in 2007 as a project that could support development of enterprise in the whole town, and has now spread its wings as far and wide as Turku in Finland and Belfast!
Despite HERO spreading its wings to work with other schools across the country and beyond, enterprise at Unity is still going strong. With the Excellence in Enterprise Award from Warwick University, a thriving school shop, active enterprise council, prom committee, fairtrade group and international trading group to name but a few of its achievements, it still remains as HERO’s original success story. The school also boasts a sustainable Family and Business centre which supports business and enterprise in the community.

Competitions! Events! Resources!
14th to 18th November 2011
The HERO project produces a program of co-ordinated activities and resources designed to be run in school during enterprise week, covering the three facets of enterprise education. Some of these activities will form a competition that will be co-ordinated and supported by the project, including provision of prizes and publicity coverage. If you would like to take part in activities run by HERO for this year’s enterprise week, please contact us for more details.
Member schools may enter their students into the annual Young Person’s Achievement in Enterprise Awards. With 8 categories to nominate for, the awards are always a popular summer term event and celebrate the enterprise achievements of our young people. We make it a special event by having the students dress up and providing some extra special entertainment.
The event is sponsored and supported by local business. Each school may send a total of 30 pupils and staff.
The HERO network consists of a half termly twilight meeting at a regional venue aimed at disseminating best practice and focus on sharing of resources. This may include guest speakers, and workshops for different sectors. Members of the network will be encouraged to work collaboratively outside of the formal meetings.
We host an open event once a year where teachers can bring colleagues along who are not currently members of the network to see what we do.
HERO needs you! We welcome opportunities to work with business, third sector, public sector organisations, educations establishments and individuals who are interested in promoting and developing work related learning and enterprise opportunities with young people. If you would like to get involved, even if you are not sure how, please contact us! We have included some case studies to show just a few ways that partners have worked with us in the past
Recently set up, the Media Academy for Young People is a social enterprise aimed to help young people experience the media industry. HERO has recently started working with the organisation and its first project is linking with students at Unity College who will be making a video diary of the progress of the major refurbishment of their school. Chris of MAfYP said “
Pleasure Beach, Blackpool work closely with HERO, helping us by hosting and supporting events in Enterprise Week, and more recently playing host to our annual awards ceremony. With much synergy between the work of the Education academy and our enterprise work, there is great benefit in us working together with schools.
The Pleasure Beach has supported us with fabulous case studies for enterprise days, and provided guidance and support through work experience, resources, the setting and themes for days such as the Rollercoaster challenge.
The Pleasure Beach also chairs the local Employers in Education group and is the first to offer when there is a requirement for work related learning.
Alan Howarth Photography has worked with HERO since its inception, photographing events, training sessions and working with young people interested in media as a career.
Recently, Alan completed a project with Year 10 and 11 students from Unity College, Blackpool, that saw them direct, film and edit a DVD entitled “A students’ guide to Hospital careers”. Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust supported the project all the way, arranging behind the scenes access and interviews with staff.
The DVD will be shortly distributed to all schools in the area to support CEIAG lessons.

St Marys approach enterprise with a social conscience, enabling students to learn essential skills for work and life, without compromising the strong Catholic ethos of the school. HERO has supported this development by training teachers, working with individuals and students alike to develop social enterprises that are both inspirational and sustainable.
HERO have facilitated super learning days developing financial literacy and introduced links to employers that make learning more realistic and work related. The school’s provision was commented on by Ofsted “Students’ contributions to the school community through positions of responsibility and work in fundraising for charity are outstanding.” Involvement in charitable events and enterprise projects contributes significantly to students’ cultural development and global awareness.”
Enterprise is truly embedded in the curriculum at St George’s and all students receive lessons throughout school with enterprising themes. A recipient of the Excellence in Enterprise Award, HERO has supported the school for the last 4 years and celebrated their many achievements in the development of enterprise. From an award winning student run Prom Fayre (now an annual event) to a new coffee shop opened in school and run by students, the school also sets a high standard when it comes to enterprise competitions and events.
Walton le Dale Primary and 11 other schools in their cluster group chose Enterprise as their theme this year for their student learning conference. HERO and the Lancashire Enterprise Learning Partnership were pleased to support the event and helped deliver an enterprise afternoon ‘Pimp my Pumps’ to 60 KS2 children. The students designed a pump to a given brief, made a prototype and then presented their idea to a panel of judges. There were raps, poems, rhymes and plays! A great time was had by all and the students went away with the challenge of making a poster that would communicate the different enterprise skills they had learned to the rest of school.
Highfurlong is a special education provider catering for students aged 5-19. The school uses enterprise education as a vehicle to help students develop functional academic, social and life skills. Working with the HERO project, the school has developed over 80 business enterprise projects in the last 4 years and are currently working in partnership with Yorkshire Bank in Blackpool who have supplied them with retail space for their ventures. The school was rewarded for its enterprise success at the end of last year when teacher, Joanne Martin won an award for Most Enterprising Teacher at National Teaching Awards.

Boundary Primary School is a large school in a deprived ward of Blackpool. HERO worked with the school to develop a through school strategy for embedding enterprise education in the curriculum and helping achieve the Economic Wellbeing criteria for Every Child Matters. The staff received training on how to make lessons more enterprising. At the heart of the schools’ enterprising success is Bank of Boundary, a project that links work and achievement to financial capability and reward.
“Thanks for your contribution in making our curriculum more relevant to our young people”
Dayle Harrison, Headteacher
